Climate Crisis: Let the youth wake up in confidence

Shahreen Islam Mahin ( Bangladeshi Climate Activist) :

The biggest and most important issue at present is environmental pollution and adverse effects of global climate change.  Scientists have been saying for a long time that climate change is the result of human activity.  Due to the increase in global temperature, various natural disasters such as cyclones, tornadoes, cyclones, droughts, floods, non-rainfall, heavy rains, flash floods etc. are increasing.  As a result, the amount of human and natural resource loss is increasing.  As a result, billions of rupees of wealth are being lost every year. In the coming days, the entire world will have to face the challenge of climate change.  The natural disasters caused by climate change will have to be faced. For this, the youth will have to play an important role.

The World Bank has warned that Bangladesh will suffer the worst climate change by 2100.  The report estimates sea level rise of three feet.  This will cause widespread flooding and crop loss in the country.  It is also mentioned that poverty and inflation will increase because of this. So now is the time for us to plan properly and collect loss and damage funds from developed countries. Otherwise, the coming days will become a lot of risk for us.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), since 2010, 2.15 million people have been displaced due to climate change. Bangladesh is one of the countries most affected by climate change.  According to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC), about 7 lakh Bangladeshi people are displaced every year.  According to a World Bank report in 2018, by 2050, about 1.33 million people in the interior of Bangladesh may be displaced due to climate change.  Now is the time for us to deal with this climate change. Because of this climate crisis, every year Bangladesh seeks financial aid from developed countries.  Meanwhile, the developed world agreed to establish a Loss and Damage Fund with the consent of 198 countries at the COP-27 conference in Egypt in 2022.  It is expected that financial assistance from this fund will be given to the countries which will admit the damage due to climate change.  Bangladesh can use the fund to help these displaced people.

Efforts should always be made to minimize the damage caused by displacement and this requires proper planning and formulation.  And for this, the youth should come forward first.  Movements should be started in their respective areas, people should be made aware of how the effects of this climate will and are having an adverse effect on us.  Many young organizers and organizations in Bangladesh are working on this climate change.  In continuation of this, the country's largest platform Youthnet for Climate Justice is organizing thousands of young people from cities to villages for environmental protection and climate justice.  Their motto is 'safe land, green forest, will ensure a prosperous youth'.  As the main mantra of this organization we have to ensure this green world.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference is held every year.  After Egypt, the Cup 28 will be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.  Besides the government delegation, thousands of people from different countries participated in the cup.  We have to increase the participation of youth in Bangladesh Cup.  Because the world needs to reduce its annual carbon dioxide emissions by about 50 percent by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050 to meet the 1.5°C target sought by all climate activists.  Otherwise, in the next few decades, the world temperature is going to increase by more than 3 degrees Celsius.  Rising temperatures at this rate would heat the world so much that normal operations would not be possible.  Crop farming and livelihoods will become unsustainable. This requires a rapid reduction in fossil fuel consumption and the youth must come forward.
